Meet Our Staff

The staff of Emergency Response Training Center brings years of experience to offer a high quality and diverse training opportunity for students enrolled in our programs. Below are some of our key staff members who are fundmental in making us who we are.

ALJAN "AJ" DeWaele, FF/ CCEMT-Paramedic-IC

AJ is from the Lansing, MI area and began his career in Fire and EMS at the age of 14 as an Explorer with Lansing Fire Department in 1988, getting training in Fire Tactics and Operations, Search and Rescue, and riding on the ambulance responding to calls and working alongside the crews providing care to patients. After high school, AJ obtained his EMT license in March of 1992 and his Firefighter I Certification in May of 1992. AJ began working as a Firefighter/EMT-B for various agencies, then obtained his Paramedic License and Firefighter II Certification in 1995. AJ continued to work as a Firefighter/ Paramedic, and obtained his Paramedic- Instructor/Coordinator License in 2005 as well as obtaining his Critical Care Paramedic Certification in the same year. In addition to working the road, AJ began teaching EMS education. AJ also has an extensive background in Fire Tactics and Rescue, such as trench rescue, confined space, and structural collapse rescue, is certified as a Fire Officer II, and is certified through the HAZMAT technician level. In addition, AJ is a certified CPR and First Aid Instructor with the American Red Cross.


AJ received an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Services Management from Baker College in 2011, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Baker College in 2013.


AJ serves as the company President and CEO and is currently the Director of Education at the Training Center.

April DeWaele, FF/ NREMT-Paramedic

April grew up in Tennessee and has an extensive background in office administration working in the legal field and at Cracker Barrel Corporate Office for over ten years. Upon moving to Michigan in the fall of 2012, April began working on her Fire and EMS training at Baker College. In November 2013, she started working at a 911 Call Center as a certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher for a private ambulance in the greater Detroit area while starting EMT school earlier that fall. Upon graduation, April obtained her EMT-Basic license and began working the road in October 2014. Also in October, April obtained her Firefighter I & II Certifications. April obtained her Paramedic license in December 2016, and completed her Associate’s in Fire Science from Baker College in the spring of 2017.


April continues her work as a Paramedic on the medical staff of the Salvation Army in Detroit at a substance abuse treatment facility. When she is not working at the Salvation Army, April spends her time serving as the company Sr. Vice President managing the Administrative side of things and taking on the marketing aspect of the company.

Marc Alvaro, Paramedic

Marc worked as an engineer for 18 years after serving in the United States Army, and later transitioned into EMS and obtained his EMT-B license in MI in 2001. In 2011, Marc obtained his Paramedic license and has worked for private EMS companies in the Greater Detroit Area.


Currently, Marc serves as the VP of Emergency Response Solutions, Inc. and oversees the Operations and Maintenance Division. Additionally, Marc works as a Medical Staff Paramedic for the Salvation Army in a substance abuse treatment facility in Detroit while continuing to work on the road as a Paramedic for Beaumont Mobile Medical, also in Detroit. When he is not working at the Salvation Army, or on the road for Beaumont, Marc servesl as a CERT Member for the City of Sterling Heights, MI.

Chad Chambers, Firefighter/Paramedic-IC

Chad is a highly experience Paramedic and Firefighter with over 25 years of experience in the Emergency Services Field. He attended Lansing Community College studying Fire Science Technology/ Emergency Medical Technician. He is a licensed Paramedic-IC and State of Michigan Firefighters Training Council Certified Level One Fire Instructor. His experience includes Municipal Fire Department based EMS, Private and Hospital Based EMS, and Service as a Flight Paramedic. Retired from active duty in 2015, he continues to serve the community through volunteering for the Mason Fire Department Fire Corps. His multi-facetted experiences give his students a decisive advantage in becoming the best First Responders in the area.


Chad will serve as a lead Fire and EMS Instructor at the Training Center, and continues to work in the Greater Lansing area utilizing his skills as a Paramedic and Firefighter.

Mike Morgan, Master Canine Trainer

Speciality Training Instructor: Situational Awareness and Canine Handling in Emergency Situations Emergency Response Training Center


Mike is the Owner and Operator of Mid-Michigan Kennels Inc, an ATF-E Licensed facility. Mike served in the U.S. Army for 24 years and retired honorably. He has served as a Police Canine Handler, working both a dual purpose narcotics and a single purpose explosive canine and has trained dogs and handlers in four foreign countries as well as across the United States. Mike's expertise in the areas of narcotic and explosive detection and patrol canines is extensive. Mike served as a Master Trainer in these three areas for the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA) for over 10 years, and he has since moved to “Dogs for Law Enforcement” (DLE), where he is accredited as a Master Trainer in these three areas as well.


Mike will serve as a Specialty Instructor teaching Responders appropriate canine handling techniques and maintaining situational awareness in emergency situations with the beloved canine .
